Overview of the LIFE SKILLS Course, WHO ARE YOU? (Get to know yourself, your strengths, weaknesses, goals, dreams, hopes, fears, and potential!) by Life Coach and Music Mentor Jerald Simon:
This course was created specifically for teens and young adults ages 12-18. The primary focus of this course is to help the rising generation discover who they are and, more importantly, who they can and will become. This course teaches the youth to get to know themselves as they are and as they would like to be. We help them answer these questions:
Who are you? Do you know? What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? How well do you really know yourself? What are your limitations? Do you have any? Do you feel you have too many? What are your goals, dreams, hopes, fears, and personal outlook on life? Have you ever taken the opportunity to sit down with yourself and have a “heart to heart” conversation about your true potential? What do you think you can accomplish in your life? What would you like to do, be, and become? What languages would you like to speak? What instruments would you like to be able to play? What sports would you like to participate in? What travels would you like to take? Who would you like to meet? What would you like to learn? Where are you currently, at this minute, with your goals, dreams, ambitions, talents, knowledge, and individual areas of expertise? What is your “dream destination?” How are you going to get there and what will it take for you to do everything you want to do and be everything you need to be?
This course was created for teens and young adults ages 12-18. There will be 10 – 15 students per class. This is especially geared for junior high and high school aged students and focuses on helping the student do and be their best.
Students learn WHO they are and who they can become in addition to learning the importance of learning 1. Skills, 2. Principles, and 3. Values by developing: 1. Good Habits, 2. There is a growing disconnect with young men and young women who are growing up in what I often refer to as the “Entitled Era”. I also have talked about this current time period as a “Fast food Society” where everyone wants everything now and doesn’t understand the importance of working toward a goal. I created this course, and these books, to help teach principles, values, and encourage the rising generation to do and be their best. Here is what I feel my personal mission in life is:
“My purpose and mission in life is to motivate myself and others through my music and writing, to help others find their purpose and mission in life, and to teach values that encourage everyone everywhere to do and be their best.”
– Jerald Simon
$200.00 Per participant (this total cost includes the costs of the weekly course for the 8 weeks and the two required manuals)
Outline of the 8 week course:
DISCOVER WHO YOU ARE (GETTING TO KNOW YOURSELF) and learning who you can and will become. – Students write out an entire page describing who they are, including their beliefs, talents, interests, and who they would like to be.
WHAT IS MY PERSONAL MISSION IN LIFE? WHAT IS MY LIFE PLAN? Describe the “You” you want to Be! – Students discuss and find out what their own personal mission in life is and what they feel, at this moment, they would like to do to make a difference in their home, their community, and their life. Discovering or realizing what their personal mission in life is helps them to have a better understanding of what they would like to do for a career, what lifestyle they would like to have, and what their purpose in life is. It gives them a sense of direction, and an outline of what they personally feel they can do to contribute to life.
Formula for success (1. Dream, 2. Plan and Prepare, 3. Go to work) – They learn about GOING FOR THE GOAL (students are taught what goals are, how to create their own Dream Map, and create Macro and Micro goals they will accomplish this year.
Positively Positive Thinking Power (why thinking positively is so powerful!) – Students learn about how their thoughts and words affect them and those around them. Students create a “SELF TALK” Statement of Positivity for themselves that they can read each day for one month to remind them how wonderful they are.
Learning: 1. Skills, 2. Principles, and 3. Values by developing: 1. Good Habits, 2. Self Discipline, 3. A Moral Compass
The Power of Knowledge (reading for life – students receive a list of 100 books I believe everyone should read) – Students also receive an additional list of 100+ books to read that have been compiled by others. The students are encouraged to create their own list as well, and set reading goals. One goal we establish is that they will read at least one book per week for the rest of their life. If they can read more than one book, all the better, but we emphasize reading at least one book per week.
Identifying Personal Strengths and Weaknesses (how to make your strengths stronger and turn your weaknesses into strengths)
Learning and Living by VIRTUES (students discuss which virtues they personally would like to live by and set goals about focusing on daily virtues throughout the year).
There are two manuals for this course that are included as part of the course tuition. One of the books is: “WHO ARE YOU?” (Your Personal Success Goal Book) by Jerald Simon – a 440 page book that features a personal daily outline that students can work on every day of the year. Each daily outline has either a motivational/inspirational quote at the top of the page or a task to be completed that day. Students are asked to do everything from listening to various classical composers (Bach, Mozart, Chopin, etc.), to learning about various styles of art, history, great men and women throughout history, science, how to change a tire, serve neighbors, and learning new skills every day. The outline has a line for the student to fill out a DAILY FOCUS (main goal for the day), a DAILY VIRTUE (the student selects from the virtue list on page 51 of the book), and a DAILY BIOGRAPHY line for the student to choose a different person every day of the year they would like to learn about and describe how that influential person has influenced them. There are then three lines for 3 micro goals to be accomplished that day, followed by three more lines for a DAILY TO-DO CHECKLIST of the most important chores, homework, and activities to be completed that day. The students can also list which books they are reading that day and how many pages they have read that day (students are encouraged to read at least one – two books per week on any topic they choose). Finally, students are asked to write a paragraph about what they discovered about themselves that day. Here is a simple description of the book from page five of the book:
This book begins with getting to know yourself, and helping you discover who you are and who you can become. It then presents a simple formula for success to help you determine what you’d like to accomplish and how to go about doing it. You are then taught the importance of developing skills, understanding and following principles, and defining and living by your own values. The majority of the book features a personal improvement outline for you for every day of the year. There is a daily focus, a daily virtue, a biography, and a checklist of what to accomplish.
